Science

Science at Falcon Bluffs Middle School

Falcon Bluffs science is focused on phenomenon-based inquiry learning that crosses through many disciplines of science.

For all classroom materials and assignments refer to Google Classroom.

Science - Sixth Grade

Sixth grade science courses include subject matter from several strands of science, including earth/space sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences, and are organized around conceptual units. Specific content includes Matter and Its Interactions, Ecology, and Weather and Climate.

Sixth grade science is all about matter and energy. We begin the year with a study of matter and chemical reactions by asking, “How can we make something new that was not there before?”  Next, we take what we’ve learned about matter and energy and apply it to ecosystems and ask, “How does changing an ecosystem affect what lives there?”

We end the year by transferring what we now know about matter and energy cycling in systems to answer the questions, “Why does a lot of hail, rain, or snowfall at some times and not at others?” and finally, “How do changes in the Earth’s system impact our communities and what can we do about it?”

Science - Seventh Grade

Seventh grade science courses include subject matter from several strands of science, including earth/space sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences, and are organized around conceptual units. Specific content includes Force, Motion, Energy, Earth and The Solar System, Molecules to Organisms, and Healthy Decision Making.

Main topics in seventh grade science curriculum:

  • Cells will consist of the different types of cells that exist on each and their components (organelles).
  • Body Systems will consist of the interaction of systems that allow the organism to follow the characteristics of life.
  • Healthy Decision Making centered around drugs, sex, and alcohol.
  • Genetics will consist of the structure of DNA, types of reproduction, traits and inheritance, and genetic engineering
  • Evolution will consist of discussing adaptations, natural selection, and factors that cause evolution.
  • The history of the Earth will consist of geologic time, mass extinctions, and taxonomy.

Science - Eighth Grade

Eighth grade science courses include subject matter from several strands of science, including earth/space sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences, and are organized around conceptual units. Specific content Force, Motion, Energy, Work of Waves, and Weather and the Solar System.

Eighth grade units - energy, motion and space:

  • Energy will consist of the different forms of energy and how that energy can be represented in waves (light and sound)

  • Motion will consist of Newton's Laws of Motion and the interaction of objects.
  • Space will consist of the history of astronomy, the formation of the universe, the scaling of celestial objects, and the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and moon.

Science - Seventh and Eighth Grade Honors

Honors science will consist of the same curriculum as the standard 7th and 8th-grade classes (see below). However, we will move at a faster pace and go deeper in each of our units to prepare students to continue their education along the desired path of taking honors Biology in high school as a freshman.

  • Seventh grade curriculum: Biology with a focus on cells, body systems, genetics, evolution, and the history of the Earth.
  • Eighth grade curriculum: Physical science focusing on energy, waves, laws of motion, space, and human impact.

The honors course prepares students for advanced coursework and engages students in enrichment opportunities.  Rigor is demonstrated through sophistication and acceleration in terms of thought-provoking learning activities, challenging assessments, and more complex text/materials.

Diverse interests, cultures, perspectives, learning styles, and intelligence are cultivated, and higher-level critical and creative thinking skills such as interpretation, problem-solving, investigation, and logic are emphasized throughout the honors course.

Science in Jeffco

The science department focuses on fostering scientific literacy in students. Quality, equitable science curricula, resources and professional learning are developed based on research to support thriving, scientifically minded thinkers.
